FAQ

Planning a Xinjiang trip involves more than choosing attractions. Distances are long, weather can change between regions, and the best route depends on your dates, group and travel style. These answers cover the practical questions we receive most often from international travelers.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Xinjiang?

Xinjiang can be visited throughout the year, but the best period depends on where you want to go and what you want to experience.

  • April to May: suitable for spring scenery and selected southern Xinjiang routes, although mountain and grassland areas may still be cool.
  • June to August: popular for the Ili Valley, grasslands, alpine lakes and long daylight hours. This is also a busy travel period.
  • September to October: a popular season for Kanas, Hemu, desert landscapes and autumn colors.
  • November to March: suitable for travelers interested in winter scenery, skiing and quieter city or cultural routes.

Seasonal roads, mountain weather and attraction opening arrangements can change. We confirm the practical route conditions when preparing your itinerary.

How Many Days Should I Spend in Xinjiang?

For one region, such as northern Xinjiang, the Ili Valley, Kashgar and the Pamirs, or a Urumqi–Turpan route, allow approximately 6 to 10 days. Combining major destinations in both northern and southern Xinjiang usually requires 12 to 16 days or more.

Xinjiang is very large, and driving times between destinations can be significant. A slower itinerary normally provides a better experience than trying to include too many places in a short trip.

Where Should a First-Time Visitor Go?

Choose the region that best matches your interests:

  • Kashgar and the Pamirs: Silk Road history, old-city life, mountain roads, highland lakes and Tajik communities.
  • Kanas and Hemu: forests, lakes, mountain villages and autumn scenery.
  • Sayram Lake and the Ili Valley: alpine lakes, grasslands, seasonal flowers and scenic road journeys.
  • Urumqi and Turpan: a shorter introduction to Xinjiang's Silk Road history, desert landscapes and local food.
  • Southern Xinjiang: Kashgar, Hotan, desert routes, traditional crafts and a deeper cultural journey.

If you share your dates and preferred pace, we can recommend a realistic first itinerary.

What Weather Should I Expect?

Conditions vary greatly between deserts, cities, grasslands and high-altitude areas. Even in summer, mornings and evenings near mountains or lakes can be cool. Turpan and desert areas can be very hot during the day, while the Pamir Plateau can be cold and windy.

Check the forecast for each destination rather than relying on one forecast for the whole region. Pack layers and keep a warm outer layer available for mountain journeys.

What Should I Pack?

  • Passport and copies of important travel documents
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Layered clothing and a windproof or warm outer layer
  • Sun protection, sunglasses and lip balm
  • Personal medicines and basic travel supplies
  • Phone charger, power bank and suitable plug adapter
  • Reusable water bottle and light snacks for long road journeys

Special equipment may be needed for winter travel, trekking or photography-focused trips. We can provide a route-specific packing reminder after your itinerary is confirmed.

What Food Is Available in Xinjiang?

Common dishes include kebabs, roasted or stewed lamb, polo rice, hand-pulled noodles, dumplings, flatbread, dairy products, dried fruit and seasonal fresh fruit. Food differs between cities and communities, so a journey across Xinjiang offers considerable variety.

Tell us in advance about allergies, vegetarian preferences, halal-friendly dining needs or other dietary requirements. We will consider them during planning, but restaurant availability and the exact meals included must be confirmed in your final itinerary.

How Should I Behave Respectfully Around Local Communities?

Xinjiang is home to many communities, and customs vary between families and places. A few practical principles are more useful than treating the region as having one fixed list of taboos:

  • Ask permission before taking close-up photographs of people.
  • Dress and behave respectfully at religious and cultural sites.
  • Follow your host's or guide's advice when visiting a home.
  • Do not assume that every family follows the same dietary or religious practices.
  • Use considerate language when discussing ethnicity, religion and local traditions.

Will There Be Security or Document Checks?

Document and security checks may occur at airports, railway stations, hotels, attractions or on some road routes. Carry your original passport, allow additional time and follow the instructions given by staff. Requirements can change, so we review relevant practical arrangements before travel.

Do I Need to Consider Altitude?

Most city and lowland routes do not involve sustained high altitude, but parts of the Pamir Plateau and certain mountain areas are much higher. Travelers should discuss health concerns with a qualified medical professional before visiting high-altitude destinations.

Tell us about mobility concerns or previous altitude problems when requesting a route. We can consider a slower pace and appropriate overnight stops, but we cannot provide medical advice or guarantee how an individual will respond to altitude.

Are Driving Times Long?

Yes. Many of Xinjiang's most memorable landscapes are reached by road, and travel days of several hours are common. Road conditions, seasonal closures, traffic and sightseeing stops can affect the schedule.

A private itinerary makes it easier to adjust departure times, rest stops and daily pacing than a fixed large-group schedule.

Is Xinjiang Suitable for Families or Older Travelers?

Many routes can be adapted for families and older travelers by reducing daily driving, choosing convenient hotels and allowing more rest time. Tell us the children's ages, mobility requirements and preferred activity level so that we can propose a suitable pace.

Can My Xinjiang Trip Be Customized?

Yes. We can plan around your travel dates, group size, preferred destinations, hotel level, dietary needs, photography interests and approximate budget. Every route, service and price is confirmed in your proposed itinerary and quotation before booking.
