Payment Options for International Travelers in China
International travelers can use a combination of mobile payment, bank cards and RMB cash in China. Availability varies by merchant, payment platform, card issuer and location, so it is best to prepare more than one method before your trip.
1. Alipay and WeChat Pay
Foreign travelers can register for Alipay or WeChat and may be able to link an overseas bank card. Card verification is handled by the payment platform and issuing bank. Supported brands, transaction limits and service fees can vary, so follow the prompts shown in your account.

2. International Bank Cards
Some hotels, airports, larger shops and tourist facilities accept international cards when the relevant card-network logo is displayed. Smaller businesses may rely mainly on QR-code payments or cash. Ask before purchasing if card acceptance is important.
3. RMB Cash
RMB cash remains an important backup. Foreign currency can be exchanged at eligible banks and exchange facilities, and international cards may work at ATMs displaying the corresponding card-network logo. Withdrawal availability and fees depend on the ATM operator and your issuing bank.
4. Prepare Before Arrival
- Install and register your preferred payment apps before departure.
- Complete any identity or bank-card verification requested by the platform.
- Ask your bank whether overseas transactions are enabled.
- Carry at least one physical card and a modest amount of RMB cash as backups.
- Do not rely on one app or one card for the entire trip.
